Sumatra Coffee, Peteri Bensu

Sumatra Coffee, Peteri Bensu

In pursuit of the best quality Sumatran coffee, this coffee is clean and the flavor reminds us of chocolate, simple syrup sweetness, molasses, and apple. Wet-Hulled coffees sometimes get a bad wrap, but this lot is clean and outstanding in flavor. This unique quality Sumatran coffee is a gem that would be a shame to miss.

GARMINDO Cooperative—formally known as the Gayo Arabica Mahkota Indonesia Cooperative—was established in 2019 and brings together 625 smallholder farmers, each cultivating an average of less than 1.5 hectares of land. The cooperative was founded by Sakdan, owner and operator of Bergandal Farm and Mill. Raised in a coffee-producing family alongside his brothers, Sakdan has long been dedicated to supporting fellow farmers in the region.

This coffee is sourced from the cooperative’s women coffee producers subgroup. In addition to the quality premium paid for the coffee, a separate price premium is paid directly to the women members.

Women producers typically deliver their coffee as freshly harvested cherry to a local collection point. The cherries are depulped, then fermented underwater for approximately 12 hours before undergoing a short pre-dry. The coffee is then processed using the traditional wet-hulling method. Afterward, it is dried on patios, usually reaching the desired moisture level in 2–3 days under sunny conditions, or up to 7 days during periods of rain and high humidity.
