Colombia La Despensa
This 100% Chiroso lot is undoubtedly one of the standout coffees we’ve tasted this season. It boasts a potent sweetness and lush notes of papaya, watermelon, sugarcane, and orange spice.
Nestled within the lush valleys of Urrao in Antioquia, La Despensa is a small enclave that offers a unique coffee-growing landscape. Unlike other regions in Colombia, Urrao features rolling pastures and wide, fertile valley floors instead of steep canyons and rugged cliffs. These valleys are nurtured by cool mountain air and natural springs.
Sitting between 1,950 and 2,200 meters above sea level, the region enjoys a consistently mild climate, rarely exceeding 77°F. This climate allows coffee cherries to ripen slowly, resulting in exceptional sweetness and density. The rich volcanic soils, abundant water, and balanced temperatures create ideal conditions for producing complex, high-elevation coffees that capture the calm, green beauty of their surroundings.
Once overlooked as too cold for coffee cultivation, Urrao has emerged as one of Colombia’s most exciting micro-regions.
